Jiu Jitsu (also known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or BJJ) is a martial art, combat sport, and a self-defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting.  It is widely regarded as the world’s most effective grappling art.

Jiu Jitsu promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend himself or herself against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique—most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person. Jiu Jitsu can be trained for sport grappling tournaments (both gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self-defense. Sparring (commonly referred to as “rolling”) and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance.

In our classes students will learn how to execute and defend takedowns, escape undesirable bottom positions, perform sweeps and reversals from the bottom, advance position along the “positional hierarchy” and apply various submission holds.

In addition to being a sport and self-defense system, BJJ is a great way to improve fitness and get in shape.  After a few months of training you can expect to improve your cardio, get more flexible, get stronger, and increase your agility and body awareness … all while having a great time!
